What Remains marks my first collaboration with dancer Matthew Massaria. After watching Matthew perform in DirtyFeet’s shows for many years, I was keen to work with him, and suggested to Anthea Doropoulos, director of DirtyFeet, I’d create a short solo for him. Luckily, she agreed . . . What began as a solo for Matthew though, soon turned into a duet between Matthew and Zoe Morgan, his artist support worker, and a dance artist in her own right. This was to honour their close creative relationship, to which I became privy during the rehearsal process.
Drawing on previous iterations of What Remains (2003 and 2009), this new version has been adapted specifically to highlight Matthew's and Zoe's powerful stage presence together. My great thanks to both of them for their unwavering commitment and enormous trust. My thanks also to Anthea for inviting me to be part of this year's Out of the Studio program, and giving me the opportunity to collaborate with Matthew and Zoe.
